The clamshell box set includes a booklet with a new essay by Mo Moore. Originally issued in September 1977, 'Magic Is A Child' was recorded in the USA following the departure of Nektar's original guitarist and vocalist Roye Albrighton the previous year. Recruiting new guitarist and vocalist Dave Nelson, Nektar entered the House Of Music studio in New Jersey to record their final album of the 1970s. The sessions saw guest appearances from synthesiser wizard Larry Fast (Synergy, Peter Gabriel) and Robert Fripp (credited under the pseudonym Walt Nektroid).
