Collins had been redefining Chicago-rooted Texas blues since the late '50s, but his Alligator years in the '80s brought him to audiences who recognized immediately what guitarists had known for decades: that open Fm tuning and a capo-driven attack made his Telecaster sound like nobody else on the planet. Cold Snap caught him at the peak of his late-career powers, a reminder that the iceman's bite never dulled.
The Master of the Telecaster's final Alligator album (1986) was also his favorite-and a Grammy nominee, too.
