Alegre Records wasn't just a label; it was a laboratory. Founded in 1961 in New York City, Alegre gave the nascent salsa and Latin jazz scenes a home at a moment when the city's Puerto Rican and Cuban communities were forging something entirely new out of the rhythms they'd carried north. The musicians who recorded here, many of them barrio lifers, were building the infrastructure of a sound that would eventually travel the world.
Celebrate 70 years of Alegre Records, the pioneering New York City label that helped shape the sound of Latin music. Spanning 1961-1975, this essential 12-track collection honors founder Al Santiago's enduring vision, and features classics by legends Johnny Pacheco, Eddie Palmieri, Charlie Palmieri, Pete RodrÃguez, the Alegre All Stars, and more. Includes new liner notes presented in English and Spanish by producer, composer, and industry veteran Bobby MarÃn. Available on vinyl and digitally.
