Recorded live in the studio with Big Brother and the Holding Company in early 1968, *Cheap Thrills* captured the raw, uncontained energy that made Joplin a once-in-a-generation voice. The mono mix, how most listeners first heard it when the album topped the charts that summer, puts her front and center in a way that stereo separates, returning her howl and rasp to something closer to the room it came from.
