Recorded in the shadow of profound personal loss, Bill Evans entered 1964 having rebuilt his trio around bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Paul Motian, two musicians with their own deep improvisational instincts. The interplay here captures Evans at a quietly searching moment, his signature harmonic introspection meeting a rhythm section that pushed back rather than simply supported.
