Bloodstone occupied a fascinating middle ground in early-70s soul, blending smooth vocal harmonies with a raw funk undercurrent that set them apart from both the Motown polish and the harder edges of contemporaries like the Ohio Players. The Kansas City group built a devoted following through relentless touring before breaking through commercially, and "Outside Woman" remains a deep-cut touchstone for serious soul collectors who know the difference between a hit and a song that actually holds up.
This recording was originally released on London Records in 1973 and has been out of print for many years. In addition to the R&B hit "Outside Woman," the release contains over an hour of music including rare bonus tracks drawn from B-sides and their elusive (British-produced) debut album.
