Ervin's hard bop tenor saxophone carried a raw, searching quality that set him apart from his contemporaries, shaped by his Texas roots and years working alongside Charles Mingus in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Recorded just a year before his death at 39, Tex Book Tenor stands as a late-career statement from a player who never got his full due, his big, muscular tone as uncompromising as ever.
Booker flexes his talents as a jazz bandleader and musician on this wonderful 1968 release for the Blue Note label.
