Baker's 1954 debut vocal album caught a jazz world off guard, a trumpet prodigy from Oklahoma who sang with the same cool, unhurried intimacy he brought to his horn. The Blue Note Essentials reissue puts this landmark back on wax, a reminder that Baker's whispered phrasing on standards like "My Funny Valentine" set a template for vulnerable, introspective jazz singing that still echoes decades later.
