The Los Angeles four-piece built their reputation playing East LA venues and festivals before this 2017 release brought their psychedelic cumbia soul to a much wider audience, landing them opens slots for major touring acts and introducing their Afro-Latin, tropical funk sound to crowds well outside their home base. Leon Michels was a natural fit, his instinct for warm, live-room analog production matching a band that had always treated the studio as an extension of the stage.
Chicano Batman made their boldest statement yet with 'Freedom Is Free,' their third album and ATO Records debut. To achieve their ambitious sonic goals, the quartet worked with producer Leon Michels (Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, The Black Keys and The Menahan Street Band) in his Diamond Mine Recording studio in Long Island City, NY. In addition to tracking the album to analog tape, Michels contributed keyboards and his trademark horn arrangements. Pressed here on pink and blue splatter vinyl.
