Recorded largely during Bowie's Berlin period, this 1981 soundtrack to the harrowing German film about teenage heroin addiction drew heavily from "Heroes," Station to Station, and Low, repositioning those already-iconic recordings in a raw, cinematic context. The film's setting in late-70s West Berlin mirrored Bowie's own life there at the time, giving the music a documentary weight that studio versions alone couldn't carry.
