Akron, Ohio's most committed conceptualists hit their commercial peak with this 1980 release, but the de-evolution theory running underneath the catchy surfaces was as sharp as ever. Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale had been refining their critique of American conformity since the mid-70s, and here the hooks got bigger while the message got no less pointed.
