Mac Rebennack spent decades as the living bridge between New Orleans' deep funk traditions and the wider rock and roll world, and a good live recording catches that alchemy in a way the studio rarely could. The Turning Point was a New York club that hosted some of the era's most vital performances, and Dr. John in that intimate setting meant voodoo grooves and barrelhouse piano in close quarters, exactly where his Night Tripper persona thrived.
