The Open Door arrived under enormous pressure, following the multi-platinum breakthrough of Fallen and the departure of co-founder Ben Moody. Amy Lee responded by taking creative control and delivering an album darker and more orchestrally ambitious than its predecessor, cementing Evanescence as more than a one-cycle phenomenon. Two decades on, it holds up as a statement of artistic independence.
