Gruff Rhys has always been one of rock's great eccentric storytellers, and American Interior might be his most ambitious solo undertaking. Originally released in 2014, the album traces the real 18th-century journey of John Evans, a Welsh explorer who traveled deep into North America searching for a mythical tribe of Welsh-speaking Native Americans. The project arrived alongside a book, film, and app, making it a genuinely rare thing: a concept record with the research to back it up.
