Experience the extraordinary beauty and spiritual depth of medieval music with Hildegard von Bingen – Ordo Virtutum, a remarkable two-CD recording performed by the internationally acclaimed early music ensemble Sequentia. Originally released in 1998 through Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, this captivating interpretation brings to life one of the earliest surviving medieval musical dramas, composed by the visionary Benedictine abbess, mystic, and composer Hildegard von Bingen (1098–1179).

Translated as "The Play of the Virtues," Ordo Virtutum tells an allegorical story of the human soul struggling between temptation and salvation. Through haunting Latin chants, expressive vocal performances, and medieval instrumentation, the drama explores the conflict between the Devil and 16 personified Virtues, including Humility, Charity, Faith, and Hope.

Directed by Barbara Thornton and Benjamin Bagby, Sequentia's performance features richly textured vocal ensembles, historically informed instrumentation, and an evocative interpretation of Hildegard's remarkable compositions.

Recorded in 1997 at the Basilica of Knechtsteden in Germany, this edition includes a substantial 63-page booklet offering valuable historical and musical context.

An exceptional addition to any Hildegard von Bingen, Gregorian chant, medieval music, sacred classical, or early music CD collection, Ordo Virtutum offers an unforgettable journey into the spiritual and artistic world of the Middle Ages.
