Rashied Ali spent years as John Coltrane's drummer during the free jazz era, and Jaco Pastorius redefined what electric bass could do, so their 1984 Paris meeting carries real historical weight. By that point Jaco was deep into a turbulent final chapter, making documents like this French radio broadcast all the more rare and valuable to collectors who want to hear him fully in the moment, navigating free territory alongside one of jazz's most important percussionists.
Blackbird contains the live recordings of the same-titled album by bass player Jaco Pastorius and drummer Rashied Ali. This live recording was broadcast on French Radio on December 19th, 1984, and features their duet performances of John Coltrane's 'Naima', Jimi Hendrix's 'Purple Haze', Ornette Coleman's 'Broadway Blues', amongst others. Student bassists Michel Hatzigeorgiou, Reno Steba, Alan Brennan, and Angel Vicens joined the duo at various times during the performance. Blackbird is available as a limited edition on translucent green colored vinyl and affixed on the protective sleeve is the 50th Anniversary Timeless Jazz sticker.
