In 1947, Hokkaido herring fisherman Kyubei (Isao Yamagata) was already girding for a tough season when his operations were threatened by one-eyed, embittered ex-colleague Jakoman (Tetsuro Tamba), on a campaign to terrorize Kyubei's migrant hires.
