Recorded in 1957 and released in 1958, House Party arrived at the peak of Jimmy Smith's run of landmark Blue Note dates, a period when he was essentially rewriting the rulebook for the Hammond B-3 in jazz. The organ trio format he championed opened the door for generations of players, and sessions like this one, with Art Blakey driving the room, remind you just how hard that band could swing.
A studio album that captured the freewheeling energy of a live blowing session, organist Jimmy Smith's House Party featured a who's who cast of musicians stretching out on a set of bebop, blues, and standards including Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Lou Donaldson, George Coleman, Tina Brooks, Kenny Burrell, Eddie McFadden, Art Blakey & Donald Bailey. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is stereo, all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.
