Joshua Redman has spoken openly for decades about Rollins as the defining voice that made him want to play tenor saxophone, so there's something genuinely moving about hearing that lineage made explicit across a full album. The assembled cast here reads like a who's who of contemporary acoustic jazz, musicians who share Redman's roots in the tradition even as they've each pushed it forward in their own directions.
Joshua Redman celebrates his musical hero Sonny Rollins with the stirring homage If Ever You Would Leave Us (we play for Rollins), which finds the saxophonist paying tribute to his greatest influence along with a collective of friends including Christian McBride, Larry Grenadier, Marcus Gilmore, Kevin Hays, Peter Bernstein, Chris Potter, Cécile McLorin Salvant & Gabrielle Cavassa.
