Hoss landed in 1995 at the exact moment skate punk was finding its melodic footing, and Lagwagon were already a lap ahead of the pack. Joey Cape's knack for burying genuine heartbreak inside songs that hit like a freight train gave the Santa Barbara band a depth that separated them from their peers, and the chemistry between Cape and guitarist Chris Rest on this record remains a high-water mark for the genre.
Vinyl Color: Beer. The first band on Fat Wreck Chords, Lagwagon pioneered the modern pop-punk movement. Hoss (1995) is a foundational pillar of 90s skate punk that helped define the signature ""Fat Wreck Chords"" sound-fast, melodic, and technically proficient. Frontman Joey Cape introduced introspective, melancholic songwriting to the genre on iconic anthems like ""Violins,"" proving aggressive punk could carry emotional weight. Furthermore, Derrick Plourde's innovative, lightning-fast drumming raised the technical bar for the entire scene, heavily influencing generations of punk drummers worldwide.
