Medeski, Martin & Wood built their reputation on the downtown New York circuit in the early '90s, earning a devoted following among both jazz purists and jam band crowds who recognized something genuinely unpredictable happening every night. Tonic, the venue, was a proving ground for that world, the kind of room where the music dictated the terms. Hearing MMW strip back to acoustic in that setting captures the conversational depth that made them one of the most compelling live acts of their generation.
Double 180gm vinyl LP pressing. The avant-jazz-funk trio Medeski, Martin & Wood - John Medeski on keys, Billy Martin on drums, and Chris Wood on bass - returned to their acoustic roots on the freewheeling 1999 live album Tonic recorded at the intimate Lower East Side NYC venue. The set featured the trio's own adventurous originals alongside covers of songs by Lee Morgan, Bud Powell, John Coltrane, and Jimi Hendrix. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition was mastered by Kevin Gray and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.
