Nick Lowe recorded this 1988 collection at a crossroads moment, still figuring out who he wanted to be after years of producing landmark records for Stiff and beyond. The stylistic restlessness here, country leanings rubbing against pub rock instincts, points toward the quieter, more intimate sound he'd fully inhabit on albums like The Convincer and At My Age, when a whole new generation came to understand what his longtime admirers already knew.
On Pinker and Prouder Than Previous, Nick found himself wrapping up his obligation to Columbia Records. Perhaps his most varied release, Pinker and Prouder Than Previous was recorded in Austin, TX, the famed Rockfield Studios in Wales, and in London. Tapping everyone from his current associates Bobby Irwin, Paul Carrack and Martin Belmont to the Fabulous Thunderbirds and The Men They Couldnt Hang to back him up, this mix of originals and covers actually predicts the stripped down style that revived his career a few years later.
