Richie Valens was just 17 years old when he recorded the songs that would change American music forever, pulling the traditional Mexican folk song "La Bamba" into the rock and roll vernacular before his death in the February 1959 plane crash that also took Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper. His entire recording career spanned less than a year, yet the reverberations are still felt in every Latin rock artist who followed.
