Ritchie Valens recorded everything he left behind in less than a year, making his output as concentrated as it is essential. His transformation of the traditional Mexican folk song "La Bamba" into a rock and roll anthem opened a door for Latin artists in American popular music that never fully closed again, a legacy felt from Los Lobos to Los Lonely Boys and well beyond.

Here are the essential cuts left behind by the 17-year-old surefire rock 'n' roll star who perished on the day the music died. His smashes La Bamba and Donna and hits Come On, Let's Go; That's My Little Suzie, and Little Girl join Hurry Up; Now You're Gone, and more.
