Based on Margaret Atwood's novel, the 1990 dystopian film The Handmaid's Tale-directed by Volker Schlndorff (The Tin Drum) with a screenplay by Harold Pinter-depicts a near-future Gilead Republic ruled by right-wing fundamentalists where fertile women are assigned as "Handmaids" to the ruling class due to widespread infertility caused by pollution. The story follows Kate, who, after losing her family and being stationed at Commander Fred's estate, develops a yearning for freedom through secret relationships and love, all underscored by Ryuichi Sakamoto's haunting score. Originally released as a lengthy suite during the early days of the CD era, this soundtrack by the versatile YMO co-founder and film composer is now being reissued as a remastered edition.
