Green Gartside and the rotating cast of collaborators who made up early Scritti Politti were deeply embedded in the DIY ethics of late-70s British post-punk, recording in squats and distributing records through independent networks before "independent" became a marketing term. This period captures a band genuinely working through ideas in real time, bridging the angular urgency of the post-punk moment with a growing obsession with pop structure and soul that would define everything Gartside did afterward.
Scritti Politti appear here in their classic post-punk bass/drums/guitar trio. "Early" collects the entire Rough Trade discography 1978-1981 from the debut "Skank Bloc Bologna" EP, "2nd Peel Session, Pre-Langue" EP, through to the lovers soul breakthrough of "The Sweetest Girl".
