John Williams brought serious classical credibility to Sky, but the band's real trick was making that world feel alive and electric rather than museum-bound. Sky 2 caught them at the peak of that experiment, when progressive instrumental music still commanded massive mainstream attention in the UK and players like Williams, Herbie Flowers, and Kevin Peek were pushing arrangement ideas that most rock bands wouldn't dare attempt.
Released in 1980, Sky 2 expanded on the band's distinctive fusion of progressive rock and classical music with an ambitious double-album set. Featuring legendary guitarist John Williams, the album showcases Sky's virtuosic musicianship across extended instrumental pieces, dynamic rock arrangements, and classical compositions. Sky 2 became the band's biggest commercial success, reaching #1 on the UK Albums Chart and #4 in Australia, while the single "Toccata" climbed to #5 in the UK.
