Vibraphonist Stefon Harris came up through the ranks of some of jazz's most demanding bandleaders before striking out as a leader himself, and by 2004 he had established the vibraphone as a frontline voice in contemporary hard bop and post-bop conversation. Evolution finds him deepening that argument with a tight ensemble built for dialogue, not showcase, which puts it squarely in the tradition of great Blue Note small-group records where the band is the story.
