Recorded in 1972 and released in 1973, this is the soundtrack to Sun Ra's self-produced science fiction film of the same name, and it captures his Arkestra at a particularly electric intersection of cosmic mythology and raw, earthly funk. Herman Poole Blount, who rechristened himself Sun Ra and claimed Saturn as his birthplace, built a decades-long live tradition around the Arkestra's theatrical, all-encompassing performances, and that spirit of communal transcendence is exactly what this music demands to be heard on.
Vinyl LP pressing. Space Is The Place - highlighted by the rousing 21-minute title track - is both an essential album and a great onramp for new listeners to travel the spaceways of Sun Ra's other-worldly blend of avant-garde jazz, experimental rock, and Afrofuturism. The Verve By Request Series features 180-gram vinyl, pressed at Third Man in Detroit.
