Colin Meloy and company arrived fully formed on this 2002 Portland debut, weaving seafaring narratives and Victorian imagery into folk-pop that felt like nothing else coming out of the Pacific Northwest scene at the time. The storytelling ambition on display here, characters adrift, cities imagined, histories invented, pointed directly toward the grand conceptual works Meloy would pursue throughout the decade.
Drawing comparisons to Belle And Sebastian (but dirtier) and Neurtal Mile Hotel (but poppier) the group really rides under the banner of the famed Big Music movement of the mid-80s that birthed such legendary pop groups as Big Country, World Party and the WAterboys. This debut CD features a full-color 12-page booklet with lyrics and illustrations by Carson Ellis.
