Before the backlash about their TV origins ever took hold, the Monkees' 1966 debut was simply a great pop record, stuffed with hooks courtesy of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. What gets lost in the manufactured-band narrative is how quickly Mike Nesmith, Peter Tork, Micky Dolenz, and Davy Jones grew into genuine artists, and it all started here.
