Tony Williams had already reshaped jazz drumming forever with Miles Davis and on classic Blue Note sessions before he was old enough to drink. *Civilization* captures him in a different mode, leading a serious acoustic quintet at a moment when that choice carried genuine artistic weight, a deliberate statement during the mid-80s when the instrument wars between acoustic and electric jazz were still very much alive.
Limited 180gm vinyl LP pressing. Drummer Tony Williams was a frequent Blue Note presence in the 1960s and returned to the label in 1985 eager to form a new acoustic band as a vehicle to perform his compositions. 1986's masterful release, Civilization, featured his great '80s quintet with trumpeter Wallace Roney, saxophonist Billy Pierce, pianist Mulgrew Miller, and bassist Charnett Moffett. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is stereo, all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes.
