Magnification arrived at a strange, searching moment for Yes, recorded without a dedicated keyboard player for the first time in the band's history and leaning into orchestration to fill that space. The result landed just days before the world changed on September 11, 2001, giving its more reflective passages an unintended resonance that fans who remember that era haven't forgotten.
Originally released in September 2001, Magnification was Yes’ first studio album to feature an orchestra since 1970’s Time and a Word. With orchestral arrangements by composer Larry Groupé and performed by the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, it includes the title track, “Don’t Go,” “In the Presence Of,” and “Give Love Each Day,” which features bassist Chris Squire on vocals. This is the last Yes studio album with Jon Anderson on vocals, and with the absence of a keyboard player, the first to feature only 4 members of Yes: Jon Anderson (lead vocals, MIDI guitar), Steve Howe (acoustic, electric & pedal steel guitars, backing vocals), Chris Squire (bass, backing vocals, lead vocals on “Can You Imagine”), and Alan White (drums, piano, backing vocals). This 25th Anniversary Edition 2LP was cut at half-speed and pressed on 180g vinyl. The gatefold jacket features new artwork by Bob Cesca based on his original 2001 designs.
