Before the fur coats, the spinning guitars, and the MTV ubiquity, there was this: three teenagers from Texas laying down raw, swampy blues-rock that owed everything to Houston's Third Ward and the Lone Star roadhouse circuit. Recorded in 1970 and released in 1971, ZZ Top's debut introduced Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, and Frank Beard as a unit built to last, with grooves that still feel lived-in and unvarnished decades later.
