Captain Sensible, madcap co-founder of the Damned, presents the vinyl premiere of The Universe of Geoffrey Brown. Originally released in 1993 and long out of print, this cult favorite finds the good Captain at his most ambitious. A full-blown concept album following an ordinary man thrust into extraordinary circumstances. Receiving an alien message with a terrifying forecast for humanity, the titular Geoffrey suffers the fallout of becoming a prophet of doom while navigating a wild romance against a crumbling marriage. Grim business broadcast with infectious riffs and engaging soundscapes.
Describing the general theme of the album, the Captain offered:
“By the time any planet - past, present or future - achieves the technical expertise to explore beyond their own world, they are already half way to destroying themselves anyway. Just like us really.”
Co-written with Martin Newell (Cleaners from Venus) and featuring backing vocals from Rachel Bor (Dolly Mixture), Geoffrey Brown plays as a bouncy sci-fi rock opera, packed with lush orchestration, playful synth work, and the Captain’s signature wit. It’s a deeply charming and strangely affecting journey visually enhanced by new artwork by Catherine Le Faou, a.k.a. Cat the Cat, with an included comic book illustrated by Andrew Pepoy (The Simpsons, Fables, Archie). Widely considered the most precious sonic chunk of Captain Sensible’s weird, wild universe of solo work, this edition pressed at 45 RPM on Pink Galaxy vinyl.
