Cohen comes from a lineage that connects directly to the source: his grandfather, pianist Sonny Nash, was a working musician who passed the tradition down through the family in the most direct way possible. "Future Stride" plants itself at the intersection of Harlem stride piano and modern jazz conversation, a throughline that runs from Fats Waller and James P. Johnson forward, and Cohen carries that weight not as a scholar but as a genuine inheritor.

At only 30 years old, pianist Emmet Cohen - the winner of the American Pianists Association's 2019 Cole Porter Fellowship - has made a name for himself performing/recording with such jazz masters as Jimmy Cobb, Ron Carter, Benny Golson, Tootie Heath and George Coleman, among others. On his new Mack Avenue album, Future Stride Cohen revisits jazz's earliest forms through a progressive lens with fine support from bassist Russell Hall, drummer Kyle Poole, trumpeter Marquis Hill and saxophonist Melissa Aldana.
