New Orleans has produced more than its share of piano giants, and Batiste sits comfortably in that lineage, whether you're tracing it through Professor Longhair, Allen Toussaint, or Dr. John. Recorded before his years fronting the Late Show band brought him wider visibility, Hollywood Africans captures something raw and unguarded, a young musician alone with his instrument and his city's deepest traditions.
Recorded in a church in New Orleans, and produced by T-Bone Burnett, Jon Batiste’s major label debut is a stunning showcase of the brilliant pianist and vocalist. Primarily just Jon and his piano, Hollywood Africans includes standards, unexpected covers, and original songs. This release displays Batiste’s dynamic talents and highlights his musicality and virtuosity on his instrument.
