Merle Haggard cut the original "Mama Tried" in 1968, and the song became one of the defining statements of Bakersfield country, a genre Haggard and Buck Owens essentially built from the ground up as a rougher, electric-guitar-driven answer to Nashville's polished sound. Pressing it on 180-gram vinyl does justice to a voice that carried real autobiography, Haggard had actually served time at San Quentin before turning that hard experience into some of the most honest music American country ever produced.
