Recorded in 1955 and 1956 with the first great Miles Davis Quintet, it introduced Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones to the wider world as a unit, a band whose chemistry would reshape what small-group jazz could be. Thelonious Monk's title track alone is worth the price of admission.
